Beijing National Laboratory
The National Laboratory for New Materials Research and Development is a new 170,000 sm campus that includes laboratories, offices, residences and residential amenities, and a conference center. The project represents China’s new priorities in scientific research with a focus on climate change. Each of the complex’s multi-functional labs are designed with the pragmatic flexibility and infrastructural support found in the leading laboratories around the world. The multi-courtyard campus plan is inspired by the traditional courtyard palaces, temples, and homes throughout China. The intent is to encourage collaboration and engagement as well as meditation and contemplation following a theme of “study in the garden” seen in both Western and Eastern cultures. To this end, outdoor and indoor spaces are interconnected both horizontally and vertically.
